Pandora looked up at the wound of a voice. It was distantly familiar- like the sound you’d get after being underwater for a long period of time. She felt her hand still on the counter she’d been standing near. After a moment of silence, she stepped out and looked for the source of the voice. “I’m here. Who are you?”

She looked around, then poked her head around a corner. She didn’t see the figure, but somehow, even though she never heard that voice before, she knew who that was.

“My name is Gaia. And you’re in my husbands… Office area. Who are you?”

When was the last time this place was cleaned, anyway? No one seemed to be around and the dust covered everything it touched. Had it been days? Months? Years even? She couldn’t tell. What she did know, however, was that this place was in need of some major cleaning. And she didn’t even know where “this place” was.

Gaia was just there to set some of Horatio’s documents on one of the shelves in the archive. She disliked the place, it made her skin crawl. So setting down the pile of papers, she sensed something. Something, rather someone, familiar, but different.

“Hello?” her voice is unsure but not scared. “Someone there?”

The fawn closed her eyes a little as she drank, stepping a little closer if only to get more to drink. Her ears angled forward as the woman spoke, trying to figure out what she was saying. It was a futile attempt though, the language of the upwalkers was simply too… foreign to her ears. She could barely understand the other creatures in the woods, let alone this woman.

But from her tone. Her tone, it showed sadness. The same sadness her mother had talked to her with sometimes. The sadness of loss and of a desperate wanting. And it made her almost sad for the woman. Almost.

Then the sound of tires made her jump, ears twisting around to the sound. To pinpoint the danger. After moments of complete still, she shook her pelt and blinked slowly. She gave a soft sound of disapproval at the withdraw of the bottle but nothing more than that, and really only because it was then that her body’s weariness made itself known and she had to lay down again, eyes never leaving the woman despite the sleep threatening to take over.

She squinted her eyes happily as she curled up, noticing then how warm and comfortable she was. Gaia slowly went to lay down on her side, facing the baby and just close enough to touch the side.

“I’m Gaia, little one. And until I release you, I’ll give you a name.” she was quiet with thought, until an idea came to her. “Pandora. That’ll be your name. It’s a Greek story, Pandora’s box. She was a curious little thing, sticking her nose where it shouldn’t be. And she opened the jewelry box that was filled with all of these horrible things. But one good thing came out, and that was hope. And hope is very important, Pandora. So here’s hope that tomorrow we find your herd and that one day I can have just a precious as a daughter as you,” she finished her story with a yawn, her eyelids getting heavier and heavier until she shut them.

It didn’t take long for Gaia to fall asleep on the straw, the days work wore her down.

{ ღ } “I broke my streak a couple of days ago.” Inner turmoil isn’t very lovely. “I— I’m sorry, Mommy.”

She wasn’t disappointed, but she was a little sad. Gaia stood and walked over, enveloping Marceline into a bug hug. “It’s alright, Marceline. I’m not mad. You did so well, I’m very proud. I only wish I was there so you could come talk to me.”

She held her out at arms length so she could look into her eyes, “You know you can come to me, yes?”

I screeched. Pandora screeched. We both screeched.

NO REGRETS.

{ ღ }“Mommy?” She’s a wreck, but let’s not talk about it.

Gaia pauses from speaking to the flower buds and looks up, her eyebrows curled slightly upwards with worry. “Yes dear Marci?”

Pandora has a husband what.

When she’s Time she does omg.

Man, I don’t think Gaia would even let her have a boyfriend until she was dead let alone a husband.

Her husband is Death. He’s the only one that can technically take care of her anyways.

She blinked and looked slowly around at the new surroundings. They were so different, but it was so warm. So much warmer than the outside air. She stepped carefully around the floor, unsure of the ground beneath her hooves. It felt strange. Strange but not unwelcome at the moment. Anything was better than the ground that was dampening rapidly with the cold.

At the sound of her voice, she looked toward the woman and blinked again, not sure what was in her hand. Trusting that following the woman would bring her no harm, the fawn swished her tail and half-trotted over to her, surprised by the feeling of straw beneath her hooves. She looked between the woman and the bottle before stretching a little to start drinking.

She sat down, making it easier for the small animal to eat. The ground was also relatively soft, so she shifted around very little, not wanting to make any sudden movements. She knew this was a very tricky process, sheltering a wild animal. Although she has done it before, she could never to too careful.

She looked at the fawn for a while, admiring how shockingly blue the irises were, unlike the usual dark brown. Her pelt was a bit damp from lying outside, but otherwise well kept and very soft.

“You’re so pretty,” she said wistfully, smiling softly, “I’m sure your mom was very proud to have a daughter like you. You’re so well behaved. Such a sweet thing,”

She heard a car pull out of the driveway over a her house, and thought of the time. It was probably her husband going out to finish some work, with wasn’t uncommon at this hour.

“I wish I could have a little family of my own,” she continued to murmur, “But I can’t give my love any kids. We’re happy the way we are, of course. If you get to meet him, he’ll like you. Hopefully you can like him too. He’s a bit rough looking, but that’s just a show. He’s a darling,” Gaia chuckled, moving the bottle back because the milk was nearly finished.
